Tribal Casinos Shouldnt Expand. 2005-12-06
An East Bay Indian casino's rival is trying to outdo them. They did this by unveiling a new poll yesterday. They did this so they could prove that most local residents are on their side.
Commissioned by the East Bay Coalition Against Urban Casinos, 300 area residents conducted the poll. The results from the poll from Nov. 1-3 showed 72 % opposed letting tribes establishing Nevada Style casinos in non-reservation areas. Urban areas seemed to be out, and it was proven in this poll.
When asked to choose from a list of reasons why they oppose this, 35% cited "social and economic problems like; crime, prostitution, bankruptcies and divorces" for the reason. 15% named increased traffic on Interstate 80 as a major reason to oppose it.19% claimed increased tax revenue, 18% job creation, and 17% refused to make a selection, saying there is no good reason to support a casino.76% claimed that they oppose the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians' plan to expand Casino San Pablo. 77% support a pending bill by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to revoke that tribe's gaming rights. So it seems that the public has spoken. Whether this will do anything to change the current position is questionable. However, it does show that the rival to the casino has backing support, enough to maybe make a change.
