Casino Location Finally Figured Out. 2005-11-06
The St. Regis Mohawks has given up on creating a casino at a Catskills resort. Instead, they are in favor of a building their proposed casino at a local raceway. Itís not rare these days to hear about raceway casinos, but why did they give up this position?
The St. Regis Mohawk tribe made this all formal, when they sent a letter to the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs. Inside the letter, sent last week, that in order to move forward with the proposed project at Monticello Raceway, they had to forfeit the Catskills resort. This site was not the only place that they had considered for construction.
The tribe also had considered the Kutsher's resort in Monticello. In the end that was a no go either. The letter was witnessed and signed by two of the tribe's three chiefs. One of the signers, Lorraine White, said the decision to abandon the Kutsher's site was a unanimous decision. The tribe's application for any casino needs Gov. George Pataki's signature, so nothing is definite not matter what places are being looked at. A Pataki spokesman said that Pataki requested that the tribe choose a site first, and then he would decide afterwards.
