Near The Racetrack Might Be Where The Next Casino Will Be. 2005-10-24
In a letter that was sent to Washington Governor Christine Gregoire, the Skokomish Tribe has shown interest in building a casino. Their proposed location is on or near the proposed NASCAR raceway in Kitsap County. The $300 million track was proposed by the International Speedway Corp, based in Florida. They have already contacted the Skokomish and Squaxin tribes about the situation.
The Skokomish Tribe currently owns and runs the Lucky Dog Casino in Shelton, Washington. The tribe is attempting to get longer gambling operation hours. They say that more activities in casinos and higher betting limits are in their sights too.
The tribe's letter came only two weeks after negotiations were held between the state and the Spokane Tribe of Indians. The issue was how to handle the tentative gaming compact that would provide revenue-sharing in Washington. So far it is too soon to tell whether or not the proposal for a casino on the racetrack will work, but at least there is the attempt.
