Beacon Hill Takes On Gambling. 2005-10-23
The Beacon Hill Roll Call recorded that local representatives' voted on three roll calls and local senators' voted on two of them during the week of Oct. 10-14. The vote was surrounding casino gambling, and the usage of slot machines. The House of Representatives rejected a proposal to allow legislators to legalized casino gambling, slot machines, and video gaming.
Of course, according to a special set of rules made by the Democratic leadership, these amendments are prohibited during an upcoming debate on a spending bill. Some supporters say gambling would produce a valuable revenue stream to fund local aid, education, human service programs and/or tax cuts. Others said that they do not support gambling, as they say it is problematic, but also say its anti-democratic to prohibit members from presenting these amendments. Opponents of allowing the amendments say that the House should not, at least try to consider major initiatives on this matter.
