Singapore Lifts Casino Ban. 2005-10-19
This week Singapore ended their 40-year ban on casinos, and agreed to build two casino resorts. They will primarily be aimed at tourists, and less for locals. The price tag of these new casinos will be about $3bn. This amount will cover the two resorts with hotels, restaurants, theme parks etc.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong did this to stay atop of the tourism business in Asia. The city-state believes that they need this to keep tourism up and competitive in the Far East. They hope to double this number within the next 10 years. Other countries in the region, including; Thailand, Japan and Indonesia, are considering doing the same.
However there are social and religious groups in Asia that remain opposed to casinos and gambling in the states. 29,000 people signed a petition recently against allowing casinos. Former leader, Lee Kuan Yew rejected a similar casino plan in 1965.
Now Singapore will be able to have them. It has been a long time waiting, but will soon come true. It will be a matter of time if this all comes to pass.
