Scheme Takes Four Down. 2005-09-28
A fourth man pleaded guilty to taking part in a former Cameron County sheriff's corruption scheme. Hector Solis (40) has admitted he alerted illegal slot machine parlors of upcoming raids, before they took place. This all took place in Brownsville, Texas.
Solis pleaded guilty to one count of obstructing the enforcement of state gambling laws. Solis was the last defendant in the corruption scandal. This scandal charged former Sheriff Conrado Cantu for extorting money from drug dealers and gambling operators. Solis will face up to five years in federal prison, when he will be sentenced on January fourth. Cantu pleaded guilty to heading the criminal enterprise and committing acts of extortion, drug trafficking, obstruction of state and local law enforcement efforts, witness tampering and bribery. Cantu, however, faces a maximum life in prison when sentenced October 31st.
