Singapore Looking For Casino Bidders. 2005-09-20
By the end of the month, Singapores tourist board is expected to present a request to build casinos. The request will likely detail how and where it can be done. Of course at this time, only two licenses will be issued.
The Singapore Government already has Harrah's, MGM, and Kerzner International Ltd wanted to be the names on the casinos made in Singapore. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's four year ban on casinos, is now in a new state of mind. He hopes to bring in tourists, and this is a way to do so. Singapore's tourism market dropped since 2003.
Many local groups such as; Focus on the Family in Singapore, object. They say that the plan, while may do something for tourism, may wake social problems. The problems they believe that come with gambling is illegal prostitution and loan debts.
When the idea of such a plan came into being, 19 proposals were made and received, and 14 were short listed. Two bidders have already dropped out, and the dozen remaining are hopeful for construction. Rostam Umar, Singapore Tourism Boards Spokesman, is not releasing any detail about the situation.
