Super Casino Bothered By Scottish Opponents. 2005-09-15
In Scotland, Glasgow in fact, made their bid to launch a 200 million super-casino. Of course are some issues surrounding it that need to be solved first. It has been said that until the operator agrees to take financial responsibility for the gambling addicts they will potentially create from this, those responsible dont even want to make a plan for construction.
Scotland has been hoping for sometime now to create their own Vegas style casino. They believe that the economics of the situation are greater than the social costs from a venture. However, others seem to disagree.
Some warn that casinos would be too tempting for the poor, causing more addicts, and a worse economic situation. John Mason, the SNP leader of the opposition on the council, attacked his opponent Steven Purcell, saying he was purely money oriented, and not thinking of the citizens.
In the defense of the attack, Purcell said the casino capital investment of 175 million, generate 200 million for the economy, attract two million visitors annually and create 4,000 jobs with a 20,000 average salary. He seems to think that this will be a good move, but others arent so sure. This is why they hope their will be a commitment for a follow program if and when casinos are built, to help addicts.
