Natural Disaster Brings Natural Accomplishment. 2005-07-26
Last month Central City Colorado faced a massive rock slide. On June 21, around 2,300 cubic yards of rock fell on U.S. 6, closing the portion of the road until it can be fully rebuilt in September. This meant pushing thousands of visitors to the new Central City Parkway.
Since 1991, Central City's previous family-owned Main Street in the mining town has been out-done by Black Hawk’s 49-cent breakfasts, BMW giveaways, and huge casinos. Due to the landside, U.S 6 has been closed, which would make the town empty, since that road lead to the casinos. Tourists didn’t make it so much into the town.
As luck would have it, Central City’s Interstate 70 was built for exclusive travel in and out. That would mean that Black Hawk would not be the first stop for tourists, but the old town. That would be a big benefit for the city, before the tourists would be off again to the casinos. This disaster proved to be profitable for Central City. The increase of tourists in the town is making Central City Mayor Buddy Schmalz full of smiles.
