The Battle over Video Gaming Industry. 2005-07-19
Internet sweepstakes workstations in York County have a new problem for officials in the battle against the video gaming industry. State Law Enforcement Division has already seized several sweepstakes terminals and other devices from three York County businesses, the first confiscation in South Carolina. The terminals, or computers connected to the internet, are perfectly legal.
SLED believes that state gambling laws are being violated because agents paid to play the games, and got the incentives that a normal player would get. An attorney for the Internet sweepstakes company alleges that the games are legal because a payment isn't a must for play. This is what makes the game a sweepstakes instead a lottery, because sweepstakes are legal. This is what makes problems for the Internet sweepstakes workstations against the video gaming industry.
