Boxing Gets Boost from Indian Casinos 2006-02-06
Although boxing has been steadily losing popularity to other sporting games in recent years, many believe that the relatively recent association between casinos and boxing may help to revive the game.
Boxing no longer offers players the charismatic figures that once drew hundreds of thousands of devoted fans to the game; there are no more Muhammed Alis, Joe Louises, or Rocky Marcianos. Also, in recent years, boxing has lost popularity because of its public imagine; many think of the sport as encouraging violence.
However, the proliferation of Indian and other casinos in the past two decades have given boxers a new venue in which to fight. Casinos make an effort to draw boxers from local clubs, since they know that locals will come out to root for the hometown boy.
The boxing games are good for the casinos, since they draw out more local and regional crowds, who are likely to stay to eat at the casino restaurants and to gamble.
I come out here with my buddies for the [boxing] games as much as I can, said Tommy DiTomaso, a visitor to Foxwoods Resort Casino. Now I dont have to go to Las Vegas to see live fights.
