Hooch-den operator Virendra Kanauj killed an 18 year old named Parveen. It was not because she protested against gambling. Instead it was because he liked the girl, and she didnt reciprocate those feelings.
Virendra was picked up by police today for yesterdays daylight murder at Sawadatganj. He claims he was waiting near Parveens house with his friends when she was returning home with her mother, Suraiya. The man said he first pushed Parveen and, as she lay on the road, picked up a stone slab, and hit her on the head.
During interrogation, Virendra claimed that he had a four year affair with the young girl, who promised to marry him. He even bared his arms to show the name Parveen was tattooed on them. He used to assist her financially, too. Last week, she said her marriage was fixed with someone else. A devastated Virendra cried, and then began to drink.
No one came to Parveens rescue as she was dying. The killers also attacked her mother Suraiya, who had to be hospitalized. After the murderers fled, public anger erupted. A mob set ablaze gambling cells, attacked passing vehicles, as well as set houses on fire. Two of Virendras associates, who were named in the FIR, were also arrested.
Parveen was a student, and Virendra, a hooch den operator. Lucknow senior superintendent of police Ashutosh Pandey said he believes the case to be a case of unrequited love. However further investigation is going on.
