Casino In Trouble Because of Website. 2005-08-14
State regulators told Foxwoods Resort Casino officials, this weekend that the casino's new online game, is illegal. Foxwood had complied with a state order last month to detach the game from their Web site, but said they intend to restart the game this week. This came after they believed that submitting information to the State Division of Special Revenue would help them restart.
Director of the Special Revenue Division, Paul A. Young, said the game violates a state law. This is because an interactive online lottery game constitutes as gambling without proper licenses. This is also violates things because it is not part of the State/Tribal Gaming Compact and the Federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. These acts allow tribes to offer on their reservations only those games approved by the state. If it is not by the state, it is not legal.
Young also said that internet sourcing for gambling constitutes as Internet gambling. Internet gambling is considered illegal under state and federal law. The Mashantuckets put the game on their casino's Web site last month. Casino managers and legal advisers must now decide what to do with this.
State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who is against internet gambling, is ready to defend the ruling in court should Foxwoods resume the game. Foxwood's officials say the game is just a way for people to check the results of Keno tickets purchased at the casino. A new case will have to examine this, and reach its own conclusion.
